Graduating in economics at Victoria University of Wellington allowed me to explore and gain experience in many areas, including as a public servant, diplomat, farmer, director, and manager of start-ups and multinational companies.

Motivated by the potential to enhance the lives of migraine sufferers, I established an innovative pharmaceutical company dedicated to creating a drug to prevent migraines. The complexities of creating and managing a biotechnology firm led me to later found a company aimed at constructing cost-effective, high-performance homes to improve the lives of Kiwis.

Lessons learned and now guiding principles:

• Success depends on a skilled, multidisciplinary team and support from colleagues and family.
• Direct demonstrations and profits may prove more effective than advocacy.
• Data-driven governance and financial reporting are critical.
• Efforts and actions aimed at enhancing people’s lives provide meaning for everyone involved.
• Passion and thinking outside the box are essential but must be tempered with reality checks.
• Integrity, transparency and honesty serve one well.
